Key Themes: poetry, manic depression, bi-polar disorder, unrequited love, belief

This book of poetry is the only creative thing I have ever produced. The poems are simple, childlike and not very profound, but they are from the heart and mind of a young girl who fell in love with someone she shouldn’t have fallen in love with (to quote The Buzzcocks). But what I thought was love was probably the start of my illness, bi polar. Although the highs I get seem to feel very much like love to me. I hope they inspire people to believe in something good even though the world is full of bad things. Karen Hunt

About the Author

My name is Karen Hunt, I live in Bury in the North of England. I have lived here all my life except for a brief period of 5 years as a child when I lived in Blackpool. They say I have bi polar or manic depression and I suppose I must accept this diagnosis. I entered hell via a bad relationship in my early twenties. I exited it via a brief, innocent friendship with a cousin in 1984 – he brought me back to a belief in God and love and life and was the inspiration behind this book of poetry.

Book Extract

You comforted me
Yet you unsettled me
Your face reflected too

Many inner conflicts
I resented the inheritance
Of a self-critical and analytical
Mind but I so loved you and
Still love you now
Sometimes I’m not sure
If I’m missing you because
Your death has actually
Simplified my life.

I needn’t look at your tiredness
I no longer have to look into your
Tinted mirror, your memory fades
And thankfully I find it harder to
Become you – frustrated, unfilled, insecure
And although they hover in the background
At this moment in time they are not overtaking
Me and simplicity is winning.

A Question of Ethics

What is right? What is wrong?
What is a true Godly behaviour?
Who sets down the rules,
Defines our morals,
Induces our screw ups
With conflicting ideals
From generation to generation.

The brain, the mind or the soul
Or whatever it is, has to develop
Because it is the process of
Climbing the ‘Stairway to Heaven’
No-one can stop the Will, the Will of God
No matter how absurd the behaviour
May seem to the spoilt and humanly
Conditioned mind!

Let us stop the progress towards
War and return to our Origins.
