Book Extract

I thought I’d found sanctuary. Wood floors, large windows, one exit, one entrance. Amenities accessible in every way. Ten minutes’ walk and the skyline from east to west were fields and foliage and the place to be. Until one late evening I sat thinking in the living room focusing on the dark wooden floors which covered the area of the flat and its grain turned into a graveyard of open coffins. Each one with a skeleton with arms crossed and feet like they were pinned together. They covered the floor from corner to corner. Where ever I looked was a skull smiling with its uncovered teeth. Although this image was unnerving, there was a peaceful calm surrounding me and the thought was not to leave, but to stay as I was home. An afterthought about the image of coffins in the living room came to me I remembered a picture seen in a history book of the way slave traffickers used to fill their ships when transporting slaves; they were packed in like sardines at the bottom of the ships laying in the same position as the skeletons. I thought could this vision have been a warning. Also I used to find myself waking up in this position; feet together, arms crossed with my hands on each shoulder. In a rigged state unable to move.
