Book Extract

It was February, winter season, dead evening, breeze from Bay of Bengal had been fine, sand of Chennai beach was also fine because of cleaning process by Tamilnadu Government (Tamilnadu is one of the states of India. Chennai was its capital.)Lovers were also fine of secret chats and kisses. Family people were also happy by playing with the waves of beach. But two of them were not happy at Chennai beach.

Chennai beach was popularly called ‘Marina Beach’. Marina beach has fine sand. Even after the tsunami attack the people never forget to enjoy evenings at there. It was an heaven to the middle class people of Chennai. There are many statues and two graveyards. The statue of ‘Mahatma Gandhi’, the father of the nation of India is also there. ‘Maha means great and Atma means soul’. ‘He is a great soul. But we. No! No! Balu thought about himself.

The statue is in black stone, Mahatma with his cotton dress, a stick in his hand, a packet watch at his waist. This statue exhibited often in Tamil films. On every Second October, the birthday of Mahatma, the statue will be honoured.

Balu never forgets every Second October from the year 1995, because his grandfather expired on that day.

The statue became alive.Balu talked to the statue.
‘Tell about you’
‘Iam Mahatma Gandhi, not only leader of freedom fighter against British, but also a great mankind in the twentieth century. An ‘Indian Jesus Christ’. ‘Satyagraha was my way of fighting. It was my weapon. Dhoti which was made of white cotton was my uniform. Harichandra story was my inspiration. Harichandra, which taught me values of truth and duty. Leo Tolstoy was a great writer to me’.

Iam the pioneer of Satyagraha, the resistance of tyranny through mass ‘civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ‘ahimsa’ or total ‘non-violence’ which led India to the independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
The statue retained its old form.

It was a full moon day. Sea waves are more powerful than usual day. Evening gets darker as the sun sets in the West. The sea, Bay of Bengal was in the east direction with the rising of the full moon. The blue sky and sea are turning into golden colour and then slowly into black.

So everybody understanding that the blue was due to sun and it was an illusion to our human eye. But both Balu and Logesh are thinking about their illusions to themselves. What is their illusion?

At marina there is a labour statue, four persons with their stick or iron rod moving a big stone from one place to another which indicates the worth of labourer’s. May 1st is the labourer’s day for all over the world.

One May 1st in America a revolution made eight hours work, eight hours rest, eight hours for their other sorts of life’s. Balu very well knew about the importance of hard work of labourer’s in factory.
