Claudette and Jon, is a sometimes light hearted, sometimes serious look at mental health provision in the early 1980’s. The two main protagonists are in love, they meet at Stigwood Mental Hospital. It is important to stress this is a work of fiction, even Jon who is telling the tale (it is in the first person), does not necessarily hold the same views as the author. If, having read the novel, one comes away thinking the action of the services was poor, then we may also find that true of Jon’s behavior. I am told the buzz word is auto-fiction, that is fiction with a nod to autobiography. Certainly, having suffered severely with my mental health, and having been hospitalised on many occasions, I think I am more than qualified to write this text. If you find at some point this work to be humorous, I shall be vindicated, the phrase rom.com. comes to mind. So relax, and let me take you into the world of Banes Mental Institution.

About the author

Martin Williams, me, was born on the 4th of December 1960. I was brought up in a well-to-do middle class family, my father was latterly an area manager for a tools firm. He sadly died very young, which had a lasting effect on myself and the rest of the family. While I have always felt I would be able to write, I didn’t start seriously until I was forty plus, at the turn of the millenium. My first novella was published by Chipmunka in 2008 and was called The Pearl Diver’s Saliva. I have made various inroads into higher education but have never completed a degree. Like Jon in “the world and his oyster” I have continued to paint and draw throughout my life, and did a part/time course at the Bristol School of Art. The “oyster” took two years to write, but I think you will find it worth the effort!

Just like my birth mother and my birth son since I take regular antipsychotic prescribed medication.

I have currently been on a CTO community treatment order for over one year. I am hoping my local 198, Contemporary Arts submit four pieces of my artwork to the 2026 Koestler Arts.

My unapologetic Apple addiction and my commitment as an investor with passive income portfolio via Freetrade app keeps a smile on my face.

I am grateful to the United Kingdom taxpayers for allowing my rent to be paid to Brixton housing cooperative… and of course paying for my antipsychotic tablets which I am supervised via WhatsApp video to take daily. I have solely on single person income based Jobseeker’s Allowance Universal credit for approximately five years. I hope to have raised my dividends enough with the next three years so that I don’t have to claim state pension at sixty seven. I am working hard and cooperating with my to do list journal work coach towards that outcome. That’s my plan.

This artwork is a continuation of my mental wealth recovery.

I am a openly lesbian Conservative Politician who lives in Brixton, London UK, rides a Brompton bicycle and uses Apple products. I have two mental health diagnosis and was the Time to Change poster girl. I am the mother of a teenaged son. I am a English Quaker and a Freemason. I am in the midst of studies with Open University. I am the director of SEE Stewart Equal Education Limited; which offers IT eduction for folk who live, work and play in Brixton. Initially I aim for the profits to establish a Care Leavers Motivational Retreat and make regular donations to Britain’s first LGBTQ Homeless Night Shelter and The Albert Kennedy Trust. I am a Stonewall UK ambassador and work full time for the Homelessness Charity Thames Reach. I aim to build and establish a LGBTQ inclusive Quaker Meeting House combined with Community / Advice Centre in Guy’s Hill, Waterford, St Mary’s in Jamaica.

Poet’s Biography

As a bio is just a bio, and I’ve done plenty of them, this is my first poetry bio. It is to introduce that lately I’ve been writing poetry — and even earlier, before, for a decade or more. It brings with it how I would like to introduce my poetry to people. Although there was plenty of time between writing and rest, between writing when none of it was deemed good (my own self-criticism), now it doesn’t daunt me. Nevertheless, it is actually useful as creative expression and to bear witness to my own life and life content.
I mean as well that if someone, even one person, was impressed with my poetry (I showed Katerina Protopsaltis), that would be entirely significant. The appreciation from publishers Chipmunka is entirely significant. But without mentorship or support, of course, battling on my own, it’s something I do: writing sporadically, spontaneously. It reaches a level, and I ask, why was I writing?
Anyway, the relationship with the pen is precarious. Enough time to write? About it? Everything? But I try to fit words into prose (not real poetry), and it syncs on its own. These are not mere haiku.
Into creation, and not symmetry, but words adjoined to express — that’s a cause, I suppose. I was listening to Lou Reed the other night. I’m privileged to even know about his artistic self, and sense is a sense; it really appeals to me — the act of creating through creativity, and the fruit it bears.

About the Author

Paul Fearne is a writer living and working in Melbourne, Australia. He has a masters on Beauty, and a PhD on schizophrenia. He has appeared on Radio National, and ABC News 24. He has launched at the Dax Centre. He co-hosted a radio show on 3CR on poetry and mental illness. During the pandemic he was regularly on the Brainwaves show as a guest. He spoke of 19^th century poets he had written books on. Fearne had suffered through schizo-affective disorder for many years.

Fearne has a PhD from La Trobe University, and a masters from the University of Melbourne.
